Argo was crowned Best Picture at Sunday’s Oscars. Best Actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. Jennifer Lawrence took home Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook and Ang Lee was named Best Director for Life of Pi.
BIG WINNERS
Argo’s director and star Ben Affleck broke down in tears recalling his first days in Hollywood while accepting the win with his producing partner George Clooney. Affleck gushed to wife Jennifer Garner in the audience and said, “There are eight great films that have every right, as much a right to be up here as we do.” Presenter Jack Nicholson was joined by Michelle Obama from the White House to crown the night’s big winner.
Jennifer Lawrence took a tumble on the way to the stage in accepting Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook. It sparked a standing ovation that she asked to end over embarrassment.
Anne Hathaway was teary in accepting for Les Miserables. She beat out Amy Adams (The Master), Sally Field (Lincoln), Helen Hunt (The Sessions) and Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook).
Adele performed and picked up Best Song for the title track to Skyfall, marking the first time a James Bond theme has won the award. Adele took the stage with co-writer and producer Paul Epworth and tearfully thanked him for "believing in me all the time."
Christoph Waltz took home Best Supporting Actor for his turn as a bounty hunter in Django Unchained, beating nominees Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln).
HOST HIGHLIGHTS
Seth MacFarlane’s music-heavy opening saw William Shatner beam in from the future as Captain Kirk to show the error of Seth’s hosting ways. Seth gave us a salute to boobs that have been bared in the movies, a dance number with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe, Flight reenacted with sock puppets and some hitting on Sally Field while in a Flying Nun suit. MacFarlane referred to the violence in Django Unchained as “a date movie” for Chris Brown and Rihanna.
WEIRD MOMENTS
Kristen Stewart and Renee Zellweger got people talking for all the wrong reasons. Zellweger appeared on staged with the reunited cast of Chicago and appeared out of sorts, swaying as the other stars stood still, and then she had trouble reading the winners after the envelopes were opened.
Kristen Stewart looked like a hot mess, hobbling on stage to present an award. She was on crutches backstage after cutting her foot on glass. Anne Hathaway told her to "break a leg" before she took the stage and then realized maybe that wasn't the right thing to say.
MUSICAL MOMENTS
Barbra Streisand took the stage to perform “The Way We Were” with a nod to the late composer Marvin Hamlisch as part of the In Memoriam segment. Other late stars that were featured included Ernest Borgnine, Jack Klugman, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, Michael Clarke Duncan, Nora Ephron and Ray Bradbury.
Dame Shirley Bassey got a standing ovation for a performance of “Goldfinger” as part of a 50th anniversary tribute to James Bond. Bond girl Halle Berry introduced the longtime Bond balladeer and said the music is “as inextricably linked to Bond as the martini, exotic cars and Pussy Galore."
Oscar-nominated musicals were celebrated with "All That Jazz" from Chicago's Catherine Zeta-Jones and "And I'm Telling You" by Jennifer Hudson. Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and cast of Les Miserables hit the stage with a medley that opened with "Suddenly."
Kristen Chenoweth joined Seth MacFarlane closed the show with the musical number “Here’s to the Losers.”
